Strategy memo: should we ship in-product code execution?

Decide whether a consumer chat product should let users run code, and what the first release should include.

Unlock with Full Access

The challenge

The chat product can write code, but users must take it elsewhere to run it. Competitors already offer execution, while conversion to the paid tier has stalled. Recommend whether to build an in-product version next quarter and which users it should serve.

A basic sandbox and a persistent workspace with uploads, packages or GPU access are very different commitments. Use the supplied engineering estimates, compute costs and safety concerns to decide how much to build and what would justify the launch.

What you'll practise

  • Product value

Explain which user work execution would improve and how that connects to the business case.

  • Release scope

Choose a feasible first version from capabilities with different delivery and operating costs.

  • Launch decisions

Connect access, pricing and success measures to the feature you are actually proposing.
